Details: Frontrunner for disabled students
In 2009, 425,063 students enrolled in higher and further
education colleges in the UK. 5.8% of these students were
disabled.
Many students with disabilities and learning difficulties realise
their full potential, enjoy their education experience and pursue
careers and leadership roles in the private, public and
not-for-profit sectors. For some, the barriers are too great.
Common Purpose's campaign and leadership development course for
young disabled leaders aims to change this.
In 2010, Common Purpose ran the first of six courses which aim to
help 240 higher education students in the United Kingdom develop
the skills and knowledge to pursue leadership roles throughout
their studies and beyond. Common Purpose will run a three-day
leadership development course in the winter and summer of each
year. Forty disabled university students will participate in each
three-day course.
As part of the campaign Common Purpose will also run an annual
one-day workshop for students graduating from higher and further
education to help them identify and actively pursue potential
leadership roles.

The three-day residential course for disabled students focuses on different leadership themes with interactive workshops, exercises and forums planned for each day.
Day1
You will start by meeting 40 people from across the UK. As you
participate in large and small group activities, you'll build
friendships, debate ideas and define leadership.
Day2
Today you will explore what skills and attributes enable you to
create change. Then you will put those skills to use as you visit
different organisations and look at the challenges they face. As
you try to create innovative solutions for your organisation you
will interact with senior leaders and see yourself in a new
way.
Day3
Having reflected on the lessons from the day before, you will hear
from inspirational leaders who are trying to make a positive change
in society. You will get to ask these leaders directly how they
have overcome obstacles and reflect on how you can learn from their
experience.
This course provides a unique opportunity to learn through hands
on experience rather than in a classroom. This is why Common
Purpose courses are capturing the imagination of young people
across the UK and beyond.
This experiential course provides a rich mix of self directed
learning, facilitated workshops and peer-to-peer learning groups.
It will introduce you to leaders you might never otherwise meet and
as you see how they lead in places you are not normally able to
visit. You will benefit from a dynamic and energised learning
environment where there are no exams or assessments and your
learning objectives are your own.

Benefit to you
You are just beginning your career. Too often talented leaders
are asked to specialise and narrow their focus to move up through
an organisation quickly. However at some point in their career
these talented individuals are told they need to 'see the bigger
picture.' Common Purpose courses have a 21 year track record of
helping people see more broadly than their specialisation.
Our experiential coursework has been designed to help you:
- engage with people from diverse backgrounds
- spot opportunities and new ways of working
- work collaboratively
- understand your own leadership strengths and challenges
- act courageously
- develop empathy.
Benefit to society
Common Purpose is committed to increasing diverse leadership in the United Kingdom. Over the course of three years, Common Purpose will help 240 disabled students develop the skills and capabilities to be effective leaders. This will diversify leadership in the United Kingdom and better represent the interests of disabled people.
